Airports on the water?

Q. How come my favorite island airport displays on the water?
A. Super Flight Planner maps have been built using digital data from Digital Charts of the World and Maproom by ESRI. The level of accurateness has been optimized for speed that means that somewhere along coasts is not very detailed. It's almost impossible to keep global world shoreline info without unacceptable redraw speed loss. The Global Shoreline database or other shorelines such as those provided by Navteq or TeleAtlas would require at least 2gb of space (either on RAM/swapped on disc). Each time the map needs redraw (which occurs every few milliseconds), there would be a need to transfer 2gb over it. The time it takes would be too long and would make the program unusable (even using 64 bit instructions or other tecniques such as 3dNow/MMX to move the blocks). Right now, Super Flight Planner uses the Spatial Database method used by most GIS software, which allows to accomodate for the whole Milky Way at the current map detail level.

Choosing default startup databases

Q: I have created two databases.  One for FSX and one for FS9.  SFP always starts with the FSX database loaded.  How can I tell the software to change to the FS9 database?

A: Open the FS2004 database (press CTRL+O). Upon loading SFP asks whether you want to set it as default database. Just answer Yes. Upon next run SFP will start with FS2004 database.

Display Intersection Fixes On/Off

Q: The toggle on the left side which says "Display Intersection Fixes on/off" does not do anything.

A: SFP handles two kind of intersections:

  • GPS Waypoints as extracted from BGL files
  • Simple fixes (e.g. N40W50) which are user defined and added to database via Tools->Insert GPS FIX, Tools->Insert VOR/NDB radial

The toggle displays/hides the latter.

Editing manual altitude and speed?

Q. When I file a manual altitude Flight Plan, the planner asks me to provide an altitude and a speed for the adding leg and that's fair. But how do I later change it?

A. When Super Flight Planner is in manual altitude mode, the Speed and Altitude fields in the Flight Plan Table are enabled for editing. Double click on the Alt column if you wish to change Altitude, on the Speed if you wish to change Speed. See below picture for a sample.

Exporting to Radar Contact?

Q. Does Super Flight Planner support Radar Contact?

A. Definitively yes! SFP proudly was one of the first programs to support Radar Contact and it will always do. To export to Radar Contact, you can save your Flight Plans to FS2004 (Flight Plan->Export menu command) or FSX (Flight Plan->Save Flight Plan) format, since RC can load Flight Sim Flight Plans.

FSUIPC returning with a 'not registered' error message

A. whenever I try to link FSUIPC and Super Flight Planner, I have the above message, why?
Q. this is most likely to occur if you have fs2004 and FSUIPC less recent than version 3.75. Just go to FSUIPC site and upgrade. You need not register FSUIPC.

LevelD 767

Q: Does SFP 4 supports LevelD 767?

A: Yes, starting last release I have included a Flight Plan Export Module for LevelD 767. I'm a satisfied LevelD 767 registered user myself!

Load an old Super Flight Planner 3 flight plan

Q: Using Super Flight Planner 4, is it possible to load a flight plan created with a former SFP version?

A: Yes. Do a Flight Plan->Open Flight Plan menu (or press CTRL+F12). Choose Old SFP Plan Files from the file type pulldown list. NOTE: although you can open an old SFP plan within SFP4, saved flight plans will be saved in SFP 4 format (SFP4 is not backward compatible when saving Flight Plans).

No backround texture?

Q. When I click on the background texture icon, nothing much happens. It doesn't look much like the screenies on your website.

A.  To display the map texture, you should uncheck all Land layers (ex. World, Mauritius Islands, etc.). While the texture should be over layers, it is actually the opposite and it makes senses, cause otherwise you wouldn't see navaids (which are loaded as map layers themselves)

Quickly measuring distances on the map

Q. is there a way to quickly measure the distance and initial course between two points on moving map?
A. Yes. Move mouse pointer at the initial measure point. Now press your Shift Key and click on your left mouse button. Keep both Shift and Left button pressed and move the mouse pointer to the destination point. Observe the Status bar on bottom (ensure it is visible by pressing Shift+Ctrl+B before measuring): will display the distance and initial bearing.
Note that this feature is available since Super Flight Planner earliest releases.

Restoring default settings

Q. How can I restore default settings with SFP4?

A. SFP4 doesn't tamper or alter the registry with stored values. Instead it keeps its configuration in the User's AppData Folder. Assuming your username in jane_aviator, navigate to c:/documents and settings/jane_aviator/application_data/sfp40 (on Vista only! directory is c:/users/jane_aviator/appdata/roaming/sfp40) and delete all files under it.
Note two things:
  1. The application Data is hidden unless you don't turn View Hidden folders and directories option off (to turn it off with Windows XP and Vista, open a folder with Explorer and Click on Tools->Folder Options. Click on the View Tab, should be the middle one)
  2. "application data" might change, depending on your Windows language

Send a plan to FSX

Q: How can I send a Flight Plan to FS/X? My Flight Plan Export List only says FS2004 GPS!

A: Starting version 4, FS/X plan support is built in. Therefore instead of "Exporting" the plan do a Flight Plan->Save Flight Plan command (or press SHIFT+F12) and choose Flight Simulator/X Plan Files from the Save As pulldown list.

Using FSX planes

Q. Is it possible for SFP to use Flight Simulator planes (from the Aircraft folder)?

A. It is nearly impossible unless MS decides to improve aircraft structures with proper data. I'm not telling this for indolence: right now I have attempted all the possible ways to no avail. Their aircraft data is suited only for FS built in planner which is a bit lame IMHO, as it has no cruise/descent speed or rate. That is why all 3rd party planners, inluding commerical solutions such as fsnavigator, FsBuild etc. have their own aircraft implementation. There is a manifacturer which claims to be working to a mega-galactic Flight Planners which imports FS Aircraft Data on his site and blah blah blah. First, I have to see it, since it's vaporware. Don't know why but when I see words like "it will support", "it will do", there are 9 chances upon 10 it's like it's never gonna come out. Second, if this software is relying on FS AC Data only, then it's an unnecessary programme: we could then stick with FS built-in without paying for yet another reinvented wheel.

Using the new logbook feature

Q. how can I use the new logbook feature ?
A. I'm writing a tutorial but as you know I become very lazy when I have to write docs...
To get started using logbook you have to create a pilot first. Since the logbook is an access database, it's autosaving in real time. No need to press any save button etc. After that, click on manage entries to start log your flights (remember flight time field is decimal, e.g 1.5 = 1 hour and half). Here again, entries are autosaved real time on each change.
